Puppy and kitten care generally falls into two categories: preventive care and sick care. Puppies and kittens need routine preventive care to stay healthy, just like people do. That’s why we recommend that you bring your new pet in for a check-up within the first few days after adoption, and then schedule regular wellness visits at least once a year. Puppies and kittens are also more susceptible to certain diseases, so it’s important to keep up with their vaccinations. For example, all kittens should be vaccinated against feline panleukopenia (“feline distemper”), feline leukemia virus (FeLV), and rabies. Puppies should be vaccinated against canine parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, and rabies.
